A while back, our LandTrust CEO and Founder, Nic De Castro, sat down with Jacob Hendrix, the host at Roadcast, to discuss the future of land ownership. Roadcast is a youtube channel that shares interesting stories of inspirational and design-minded people. Their motto is to uncover design inspiration wherever the road leads...
During their conversation, Jacob and Nic discuss the gig economy: leveraging the idea that maybe what we already have is enough if we can find new ways of sharing it. Last year, the country saw public land access spike drastically, which is great to see so many people outdoors and enjoying the fresh air! Although, when you're looking for that peace and quiet time to yourself, then you often have to look elsewhere. Private land is highly sought after for recreation purposes for a myriad of reasons: often better biodiversity, more wildlife and less pressure from the public.
LandTrust believes that the future of working lands will require stacked enterprises and is dependent on a portfolio of income. Nic states, 'Just cattle, just corn, just grain - it's not going to pay for everything.' However, operating production agriculture, conservation, and recreation access, that combination will pass working lands from generation to generation.
De Castro goes on to explain why he believes conservation is part of this equation:
Profit is the way... it's not a bad word! Historically, profit and conservation were not two words that you'd see in a sentence, but now it can be.
